Breaking: Veteran DT Jeffery Simmons Heading to Chicago in Blockbuster
Another star defensive tackle is off the board as Jeffery Simmons is heading to the Chicago Bears. Simmons was the 19th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, and has spent his whole career with the Titans. He's played in 5 playoff games in his career. In Simmons’ rookie year, he helped his team to the AFC Championship, where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Why This Works for Tennessee…
Getting rid of Jeffery Simmons is a big blow for the Titans, not that they're making the playoffs or anything. They did get a massive return for Simmons, in two first round picks! This past June, the Titans signed Simmons to a three-year, $105 million extension with $100 million guaranteed. So they are going to have to eat that dead money, but get two first round picks in return.
Why This Works for Chicago…
Chicago's best pass rusher as of now is Montez Sweat, and adding Simmons could really help them out defensively. The Bears have the 7th most sacks in the NFL, with 19.0, and they could finish top 3 with Simmons added to the front line. This move could make Chicago a legitimate Super Bowl contender. With Caleb Williams at quarterback, a talented group of running backs and receivers, and an improved defensive line, the Bears have plenty of potential to make a Super Bowl run.
Who Wins?
The Chicago Bears paid way too much to get Simmons, so the Titans win this trade. Two first-round picks for a 29-year-old defensive tackle is a not a smart move and massive price to pay, as we just saw the 49ers acquire DeForest Buckner for a single fourth round pick. Obviously, Simmons is better than Buckner, but you don't need to give up two first round picks!
